Remote design work has become a permanent feature of the UK job market. What started as a pandemic-era shift has matured into a genuine working model, with many product-led companies now hiring designers on a fully remote basis as standard. The strongest demand for remote designers is at mid-level and above, where companies compete nationally — and sometimes internationally — for experienced talent.
Remote design roles are most common in product-led SaaS companies, scale-ups and distributed-first organisations. Fintech companies, particularly those that grew during the shift to remote work, are consistent hirers. Larger tech companies with established remote cultures — including those headquartered outside the UK but hiring UK-based designers — also feature regularly. Agencies are less likely to offer fully remote positions, though some digital product studios have adopted remote-first models.
Remote design salaries have converged with London rates at senior level, as companies compete nationally for talent. At junior and mid-level, some employers apply location-based adjustments, but this practice is becoming less common. Use our guides to benchmark your pay.
All jobs on this page are listed as fully remote by the hiring company. UX Gigs distinguishes between remote, hybrid and on-site roles based on what the company states in their job listing. If a role requires any regular in-office attendance, it is classified as hybrid, not remote. You can filter for hybrid roles separately on the main jobs page.
Not necessarily. At senior and lead levels, remote design salaries are often comparable to London rates, as companies compete nationally for talent. Some employers apply location-based pay bands, which can mean lower salaries for designers outside London. However, this practice is declining. Contract remote roles typically pay at or near London rates regardless of location. Check our salary guides for current benchmarks.
Product design and UX research tend to have the highest proportion of remote roles. Product designers are often embedded in distributed squads where remote work is the norm. UX researchers can conduct much of their work remotely — interviews, surveys, analysis and synthesis all translate well to remote settings. UI design roles are slightly less likely to be fully remote, as some companies prefer closer collaboration on visual design work.
Remote junior design roles exist but are less common than senior remote positions. Many companies prefer junior designers to work in the office or hybrid, where they can receive in-person mentoring and collaborate more easily with their team. That said, some remote-first companies hire at all levels. If you are specifically looking for junior roles, broadening your search to include hybrid positions will give you more options.
Most remote design roles listed on UX Gigs require you to be based in the United Kingdom for tax and employment law reasons. Some companies specify UK or EU residency. A smaller number of roles are genuinely location-independent. Each listing states the employer's location requirements — always check before applying if you are based outside the UK.
Yes. Contract design roles are disproportionately remote compared to permanent positions. Many companies that require permanent staff in the office are happy for contractors to work remotely, particularly for defined project scopes. This makes contracting an attractive option for designers who prioritise location flexibility. See our contract design jobs page for current listings.
