Day rate data on this page is based on 2 contract UX designer roles listed on UX Gigs between December 2025 and April 2026. Figures are calculated from advertised day rates — where a range is given, both bounds are included. Roles that do not advertise a rate are excluded. All figures are in GBP and represent gross daily rate before tax. Data is refreshed monthly.
IR35 determines whether a contractor is taxed as self-employed or as an employee. Outside IR35 means you operate through a limited company with more tax-efficient take-home pay. Inside IR35 means you are taxed at source via PAYE. Always confirm the IR35 status before accepting a contract.
For outside IR35 contracts, a limited company is typically more tax-efficient. For inside IR35 contracts, an umbrella company handles the PAYE deductions for you. Some UX designers maintain a limited company and switch to umbrella arrangements for inside IR35 engagements. The right choice depends on your contract mix and personal circumstances — speak to a contractor-specialist accountant.
A realistic planning figure is 200–220 billable days per year, accounting for 25+ days of holiday, 8 public holidays and gaps between contracts. Experienced contractors with strong networks may bill closer to 230 days. Those new to contracting should plan conservatively — 200 days — until they have established a pipeline of work.
Remote UX designer contract rates are broadly consistent with on-site rates at senior level. Companies hiring remote contractors are competing nationally for talent and price accordingly. At junior and mid-level, there can be a small discount for remote roles, but this is becoming less common. The location of the hiring company matters more than where you are based — London-headquartered companies tend to pay London rates regardless.
